How to Prepare for a Move

Preparing for a move can seem daunting, there’s so much to pack and you have to figure out how to get it all to your new place!  Don’t worry, Big Mike’s Moving & Storage is here to help you with everything you need to make the transition to beautiful and sunny Sarasota, Florida.  Whether you’re coming from another city in Florida, or another state altogether, we’re here to assist you every single step of the way.

Pretty early on, you’ll want to take care of some of the bigger details.  For example, requesting time off work and scheduling cleaning services may need to be done a couple of months in advance.  Let us know when you need us, and we’ll be there!  A lot of the paperwork stage can be done around this time as well.  For example, if you have children you’ll want to look into transferring their transcripts to their new schools.

About six weeks away from moving day, start collecting boxes and moving supplies.  You can score free boxes from stores and restaurants!  Label boxes or color code them by room to feel as organized as possible while packing and when you reach your new space.  You can also mark some moving boxes as fragile to ensure your delicate items arrive in one piece.  To save on packing supplies, use soft items you’re already bringing with you like socks, t-shirts, towels, and linens to wrap around fragile items!  If there are any minor repairs that need to be done to your home you’ll want to take care of those during this time frame as well.  

When you hit the one-month away from the moving day mark, start packing!  Put away all your seasonal items that you don’t need first.  You can also pack up items you don’t use often but aren’t ready to part with.  Label every single box you pack and measure all your furniture to make sure it can fit in your new space.  Start cleaning out your fridge, freezer, and pantry, and only buy things you need as you go.  This will make moving day easier.  

As you get closer, you’ll want to finish by packing up everything!  Whatever is going to your new home should be boxed up or labeled.  Don’t forget to set up pickups for donated items and toss out trash!  Do a final walkthrough on a moving day to ensure you didn’t leave anything behind, and let us take care of the rest!
